Skilled Visa
Australia’s workforce offers numerous opportunities for skilled
workers from across the world. If you’re trained in an area that Australia deems
valuable – and can prove that you’re proficient in it – then you may be eligible
for a Skilled Visa which can come with numerous benefits.
Depending on the type of visa you apply for, you may be able to live and
work permanently anywhere in Australia and your family may be able to come with
you.
To be eligible for a skilled visa you must:
Have an occupation on the relevant skilled occupation list;
Have a suitable skills assessment for the occupation;
Be invited to apply for this visa;
Satisfy the points test.
Skilled Occupations and a Skills Assessment
When submitting your Expression of Interest, you must show that your occupation is on the relevant skilled occupation list for the type of visa you’re applying for. It’s also highly recommended that you obtain your skills assessment before submitting your interest, as assessments which are obtained after you’re invited to apply cannot be relied upon.
Your skills assessment must also be issued by the relevant assessing authority, so please check this against your occupation to ensure your assessment will be accepted.
How do I get invited?
To be eligible for any Skilled Visa, you must be invited to apply by the Australian Government and SkillSelect. To let the government know you’d like to apply for a visa, you need to submit an Expression of Interest form via SkillSelect.
You must be aged under 45 when we invite you to apply for the visa, so please make sure there is enough time before your 45th birthday for your invitation to come through.
The Points Test
Some types of skilled visas are points-tested, so you must be able to show that you’ve hit a minimum number of points to be invited to apply. Points are granted based on prior experience, education, and English levels among other things.
